The City of Essen and the Ruhrgebiet
With more than 5 Mio. residents, the Ruhr-Metropolitan-Area is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany. Despite its urban style, the Area has a rich cultural background and countless recreation areas, with lake Baldeney being among the most famous and most beautiful ones.
Essen is the very center of this area, and was elected as the European Capital of Culture 2010 representative for the whole Ruhr-Area. “Culture through Change, Change through Culture” is the motto chosen by the 53 Cities of RUHR.2010. The location of the Opening Ceremony of the Capital of Culture takes place at the UNESCO world heritage site Zollverein in Essen – which perfectly symbolizes the motto with its change from an industrial mining site to a cultural and recreational centre. All through the year 2010 numerous events are being held all over the area to showcase the diverse culture of the region.
